Course Information

NURS 4110: Transformation to the Professional Nurse Role

This course focuses on the knowledge, competencies, skills, and abilities for transformation
to the professional nurse role.

Students who successfully complete this course should be able to do the following: 

  1. Examine ethical principles in professional practice and analyze ethical dilemmas in contemporary healthcare situations.
     
  2. Examine the roles and activities of nurses and professional associations in influencing policy decisions.
     
  3. Discuss the changes in quality improvement and safety standards and expectations and their impact on current professional nursing.
     
  4. Discuss different communication strategies and teaching-learning methods to support patients and their support networks that are appropriate for one’s developmental stage, age, culture, and health literacy.
     
  5. Develop a personal philosophy of professional nursing in relation to the metaparadigm and the characteristics of a profession.
     
  6. Discuss professionalism within the context of nursing history, roles, values, philosophies, and education.
     
  7. Analyze critical professional concepts/frameworks within the context of professional development.
     
  8. Assess current professional competencies and behaviors to determine areas of strength and improvement for future growth.
     
  9. Synthesize current healthcare issues/challenges and the impact on nursing in diverse practice settings.
  • You will need to know how to use Microsoft Word © processing program, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and how to send email and attachments - If you need assistance with any of these skills, please contact Ms. Hayes
     
  • You will need a pc or laptop that has Windows 8/Mac OS 10.12 (or higher) and a stable connection to the Internet - preferably a high-speed WiFI connection. Be aware that Chromebooks cannot support Blackboard or other AUM applications. 
     
  • You will need to download the Microsoft Office Suite from Microsoft 365.You will use your MyAUM credentials to access this download.

Course Assignments

For these assignments, you will need to incorporate scholarly/peer-reviewed articles that can be found in the AUM Library, preferably those published within the last five years and related to the discussion topic.
