AUM Interlibrary Loan Services: What is Interlibrary Loan

Information and resources to better help AUM users navigate the Interlibrary Loan/ALLIES services.

AUM Interlibrary Loan

The AUM Interlibrary Loan Department is dedicated to locating and borrowing materials to meet the information needs of students, faculty, and staff. The Library also lends its resources to libraries across the nation and around the world to support global education.

AUM faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students may request materials not owned by the Library through Interlibrary Loan. To avoid delays, always check to see if the library owns the item before submitting requests.

To expedite your Interlibrary Loan requests,

  • Before requesting books, check our online catalog

  • If you are requesting a magazine or journal article, search our journal tool. To use, type in the title of the journal or magazine. This search will tell you if the journal or magazine is owned by the library and/or is available full-text through one of the library's databases.

PLEASE NOTE: The Interlibrary Loan department CANNOT fill requests for textbooks; materials for class, reserve or group use; or books assigned as required reading for a class.

Interlibray Loan FAQ

How long does it take?

Most ILL requests for physical items typically arrive within 7 business days of the request date. Requests for electronic or digital copies will often take 3-5 business days, but might take longer. Out-of-state and hard-to-find items may take more time to find. If you have not received an arrival notice within 7 business days of placing your request(s) for either physical or electronic material, please contact us (tel: 334-244-3447, email: interlibraryloan@aum.edu)

How much does it cost?

The ILL department of the AUM Library will always try to obtain requested material at no cost to you. If charges are involved, you will be notified before the item is requested. You are responsible for any charges that you agree to pay, even if the requested item arrives after your research is completed.

How will I know when my material has arrived?

When your requested items arrive, you will be notified by the email address and/or phone number you provided under Communication Preferences on the Interlibrary Loan system page (see how-to video). Be sure to provide a valid email address and telephone number on your requests so that you can be contacted.

How do I obtain my ILL materials?

ILL physical items can be picked up at the Access Services Desk on the first floor of the library. You MUST have your AUM ID card to check out out the requested material.

Most ILL electronic items  are delivered electronically. When your article arrives, you will receive an email that tells you how to access it. If the copy quality of the article is too poor to be delivered electronically, a paper copy will be available at the Access Services Desk on the first floor of the library.

Can I renew ILL materials?

Some lending libraries allow renewal of ILL materials, others do not. Please call the interlibrary loan department at 334-244-3447 to request a renewal. Renewal requests must be made 3 days before the book is due.

How do I return ILL materials?

In most cases, photocopies or downloaded digital items are yours to keep. ILL physical material should be returned to the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the library. DO NOT put ILL materials in the outside book drop. If you lose or damage an ILL book, you will be charged for the cost of the item, plus a replacement fee to be determined by the lending library.
