NURS 4140: Population-Based Practice

This course explores the concepts and theories underlying population-based practice in community health settings and environments in the delivery of nursing care for individuals, families, and populations.

Students who successfully complete this course should be able to do the following: 

  1. Assess the health, healthcare, and emergency preparedness needs of a defined population.
  2. Utilize information technology to effectively communicate collaboratively with individuals, families, populations and health care delivery systems.
  3. Assess health/illness beliefs, values, attitudes, and practices of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.
  4. Apply evidence-based practices to guide health teaching, health counseling, screening, outreach, disease and outbreak investigation, referral, and follow-up throughout the lifespan.
  5. Participate in clinical prevention and population-focused interventions with attention to effectiveness and to the health of vulnerable populations.
  6. Use clinical judgment and decision-making skills in appropriate, timely nursing care during disaster, mass casualty, and other emergency situations.
  7. Collaborate with others to develop an intervention plan that takes into account determinants of health, available resources, and the range of activities that contribute to health and the prevention of illness, injury disability, and premature death.
  8. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and patients to provide spiritually and culturally appropriate health promotion and disease/injury prevention interventions.
  • You will need to know how to use Microsoft Word © processing program, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and how to send email and attachments - If you need assistance with any of these skills, please contact Ms. Hayes
  • You will need a pc or laptop that has Windows 8/Mac OS 10.12 (or higher) and a stable connection to the Internet - preferably a high-speed WiFI connection. Be aware that Chromebooks cannot support Blackboard or other AUM applications. 
  • You will need to download the Microsoft Office Suite from Microsoft 365.You will use your MyAUM credentials to access this download.
