NURS 4270: Rural Health and Special Populations

Explores rural community health nursing, focusing on the history and development of rural community-focused care, health care systems, epidemiology, and individuals, families, and special populations. Determine and apply appropriate theories to the provision of care to individuals in rural community settings and special populations in rural, urban or suburban settings. Address prevention, promotion, maintenance, and restoring health. Focus on transcultural nursing concepts and diverse populations.

Students who successfully complete this course should be able to do the following: 

  1. Identify social and cultural barriers to accessing the healthcare system pertinent to special populations.
     
  2. Discuss the issues and characteristics of the rural public health workforce and issues related to access to healthcare for rural communities.
     
  3. Describe nursing practice, health policies, and health care delivery that affects rural communities and special populations
     
  4. Synthesize current health care issues/challenges and the impact on nursing in diverse practice settings.
  • You will need to know how to use Microsoft Word © processing program, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and how to send email and attachments - If you need assistance with any of these skills, please contact Ms. Hayes
     
  • You will need a pc or laptop that has Windows 8/Mac OS 10.12 (or higher) and a stable connection to the Internet - preferably a high-speed WiFI connection. Be aware that Chromebooks cannot support Blackboard or other AUM applications. 
     
  • You will need to download the Microsoft Office Suite from Microsoft 365.You will use your MyAUM credentials to access this download.
